Ilarij ( Ukrainian Іларій ; secular name Eduard Stepanovich Schischkowskij , Russian Эдуард Степанович Шишковский , Eduard Stepanowytsch Schyschkiwskyj , Едуард Степанович Шишківський * 18th April 1969 in Mykolaiv , Ukrainian SSR ; † 16th March 2018 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was an archpriest of the Ukrainian -Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate , Archbishop of Makarov , Auxiliary Bishop of the Kiev Diocese, Rector of the School of Catechesis and Conductors and the School of Iconography of the Kiev Diocese. Archbishop Ilarij often represented the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in inter-church and academic events, both inside and outside Ukraine.

biography

Born into a religious family, he was baptized on June 9, 1969 in the Mykolajiv Church of All Saints with the name Ioann. From 1976 he attended secondary school №14 in Mykolaiv. In 1980, after moving to the city of Brjanka in Luhansk Oblast , he switched to secondary school №10, which he finished after six years. He continued his education at the vocational school №18 and finished it in July 1987 with an award. From July 1987 to June 1988 he worked as a drilling assistant on the "Lenin Geological Expedition".

From June 19, 1988 to May 29, 1990, he did his military service in the Soviet Army in Saratov . He then attended the Kiev Priest School, which he graduated with honors in 1997. From 1996 he worked as a teacher at the Kiev Priest School. On March 18, 1999, he received his doctorate on the subject of "Aesthetic-religious views of Old Russia in the Pre-Synodal Period", for which he was awarded the degree of candidate for doctrine of the faith. In 1999 he was appointed lecturer at the Kiev priest schools for the doctrine of the faith, "Moral doctrine", "Old Slavonic language", "Religious ethics" and "Orthodox ecclesiology". He began his employment at the Kiev priest schools as a supervisory assistant to the supervisor. He also taught the history of Orthodoxy in Russia and Church Slavonic .

Since 1999 he has been a member of the committee of the Kiev Priestly Academy and secretary in charge of the “Work of the Kiev Priestly Academy”. In 2000 he was ordained a monk with the name Ilarij and was also ordained a priest monk. In August 2000 he was appointed head of the publishing department of the Kiev metropolis. With his help, the "Orthodox Newspaper" was launched. In 2001 he was consecrated as Igumen on Holy Easter Day with the blessing of the Kiev Metropolitan Vladimir . From 2002 he taught the course "The Basics of Christian Morality" and headed the pulpit of the Doctrine of the Faith, based on the "Ukrainian-Azerbaijani Institute of Social Sciences and International Relations named GA Aliyev at the International Academy of Personnel Management".

In March 2003 he became a member of the active ethical committee at the State Center for Immunobiological Preparations. On November 21, 2003, with the blessing of the Metropolitan of Kiev Vladimir, he was appointed Archimandrite. On January 28, 2005 he was appointed secretary of the body of the Kiev priest schools; on March 30, 2007 as its prorector. Following the resolution of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the appointment as secretary of the body at the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church followed on June 10, 2007.

Archpriesthood

On July 27, 2007 he was selected as Bishop of Severodonetsk and Starobeljsk following a resolution by the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church . In the residence of Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and the whole of Ukraine, Archimandrite Ilarij was raised to the rank of Bishop of Severodonetsk on July 28 of the same year and consecrated by him on July 29, 2007 in the Kiev- Pechersk Lavra as Bishop of Severodonetsk and Starobelysk. After the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Church on December 14, 2007, he was transferred to the pulpit in Sumy .

By resolution of the Synod of November 11, 2008, Bishop Ilarij was transferred to the Diocese of Cherson and Tauria (Journal №103) and at the same time appointed Head of the Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechesis of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Journal №104).

His appointment as bishop of Makarovsk and auxiliary bishop of the Kiev metropolis took place on November 17, 2008 by decision of the synod (conference journal №108). By the same resolution, the Synod blessed the opening of the Spiritual School of Catechesis and Direction and the School of Iconography in the Kiev Diocese. Bishop Ilarij was appointed rector (Journal №109).

On December 23, 2010, he became Chairman of the Bioethics and Ethical Affairs Committee of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Bishop Ilarij was also entrusted with the management of the newly established Makarowski Auxiliary Bishop's Office of the Kiev diocese. The Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church decided at its session on February 10, 2011 to exempt Bishop Ilarij of Makarevsk, Auxiliary Bishop of the Kiev Metropolis, from the post of Chairman of the Board of the Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechesis of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

On March 27, 2011, he took part in a Greek Catholic liturgy and enthronement of the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Svyatoslav Shevchuk , whom he congratulated Vladimir on behalf of the Metropolitan of Kiev.

On September 25, 2013, in connection with the reorganization of the Makarevsky auxiliary bishopric, he became its head. On September 16, 2014, the Committee on Bioethics and Ethical Affairs at the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which he chaired, was dissolved.

On August 17, 2015, Bishop Ilarij was conferred the office of Archbishop by Metropolitan Onufrij at a liturgy during the Little Entry . On January 4, 2018, in connection with the reorganization of the auxiliary bishop's offices in the Kiev diocese, he was appointed head of the auxiliary bishop's office of Byshevsk, the dioceses of Byshevsk, Makarowsk and Fastovsk, "for the purpose of effective ecclesiastical and administrative management of parishes".

As part of his office as Archbishop of the Moscow Patriarchate , he also led several church services in Orthodox communities in Germany, for example on August 21, 2016 in the Stuttgart "Russian Orthodox Church Community of the Holy Prophet Elias".

Death and funeral

Archbishop Ilarij suffered an aneurysm and stroke on March 10, 2018 and fell into a coma. In the intensive care unit of the Kiev clinic “Boris” he died peacefully in a coma on March 16, 2018 at around 2 p.m. as a result of the stroke.

On March 17, 2018, Metropolitan Pavel of Vyshgorod and Chernobyl celebrated a liturgy and funeral service for Archbishop Ilarij. He was buried in the brothers' cemetery in the Pecherskaya Icon of Our Lady monastery kite.
