Onufrij (Beresowskyj or Beresowskyj Orest Volodymyrowytsch) (born November 5, 1944 in Korytne , Vyshnytsia district , Chernivtsi Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) has been Metropolitan of Kiev and the whole of Ukraine of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate since August 17, 2014 .

Life

In 1961 he finished school and then studied at a technical center in Chernivtsi. After 1964 he worked as a builder. In 1965 he began his studies at the National Jurij Fedkowytsch University in Chernivtsi . In 1969, after finishing the third year of studies in Chernivtsi , he continued his studies in the second year of study at the Moscow Spiritual Academy , which he finished in 1972. On March 21, 1971 he became a monk and in 1980 a hegumen . On August 28, 1984 he was appointed church leader of the Transfiguration Cathedral in the village of Lukino ( Moscow Oblast ). On June 28, 1985, he became archpriest of the Trinity Monastery of Sergiev Posad . At Christmas 1986 he became Archimandrite . In 1988 he received his doctorate in theology from the Moscow Spiritual Academy and in the same year he became head of the Ascension Monastery , where he remained until 1990. On December 9, 1990, he became a bishop in the Vladimir Cathedral. On June 28, 1994 Onufrij became archbishop and thus a member of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church . On June 11, 2013, he received the Order of Friendship .

After Metropolitan Volodymyr's death he was initially locum tenens and then became head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
