Ilhan Koman (born June 17, 1921 in Edirne , Turkey , † December 30, 1986 in Stockholm , Sweden ) was one of the most famous and influential sculptors in Turkey. Koman came from one of the oldest artist families in Edirne . After leaving school he applied to the Academy of Applied Arts in Istanbul for the painting class of Leopold Levy . While studying painting, Koman also took the sculptural design course with Hadi Bara and Zühü Müridoglu, which showed his sculptural talent for the first time. So, on the advice of his teachers, he switched to the sculpture class of Rudolf Belling , who further promoted his talent.

After graduating from the Academy in 1946, he lived for three years in Paris , where he attended the Académie Julian , and discovered for himself, in addition to Rodin's work, Brancusis and Giacometti. His works in stone and ceramics, which were created during this time, reflect the fascination for their works.

From 1951 he found employment as a teacher at the Academy in Istanbul, where he worked for seven years. His most famous works were created from 1958 in collaboration with the architect Ralph Erskine in Sweden. During this phase the first outdoor sculptures were created, including for Expo 58 in Brussels . Over the years, Koman's work has been characterized by his great willingness to experiment, especially with materials such as steel , stone and ceramics . Its shape shows the most varied of influences, ranging from ancient forms and ornamentation to kinetic geometries.
