Ilya Anatolyevich Simin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ilya Anatoljewitsch Simin ( Russian Илья Анатольевич Зимин ; born  May 1, 1972 in Vladivostok ; †  February 26, 2006 in Moscow ) was a Russian journalist and television reporter who most recently worked for the private broadcaster NTW .

Life

Ilya Simin graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at the Far Eastern State University of Vladivostok and worked for a local television station while studying. After graduating, he came to NTW and initially worked in the Far East Correspondence Office, since 1995 as its head. In 2000 he switched to NTW headquarters in Moscow as a reporter. After the hostile takeover of NTW by the Gazprom Group in the spring of 2001, Simin, like numerous other NTW employees, switched to the supposedly more liberal broadcaster TW-6 , later TWS . After the closure of TWS, however, he returned to NTW and worked there as a special reporter. He became known to the general public primarily through his contributions to the program "Профессия: репортёр" ("Profession: Reporter", based on the feature film of the same name ), which broadcast detailed 30-minute reports on a wide variety of topics. In 2003 he received the annual Russian television award "TEFI" as "Best Reporter of the Year 2002".

On February 26, 2006, Simin was found dead in his Moscow apartment. The fact has not been resolved to this day. The suspect Igor Weltschew, arrested in Moldova in June 2006, denies his guilt. The trial against him is to take place in a court in a provincial town in northern Moldova. A common quarrel has been assumed as the motive; some Russian tabloids also link Simin's killing to his possible homosexuality . In its 2007 annual report, the organization “ Reporters Without Borders ” points out that Simin shot a report on the hygienic conditions in Moscow restaurants and hotels with a hidden camera before his death.
