Ilya Hurník

Ilja Hurník (born November 25, 1922 in Poruba ; † September 7, 2013 ) was a Czech composer and pianist .

Life

Hurník studied piano with Vilém Kurz and composition with Vítězslav Novák at the Prague Conservatory and at the Prague Art Academy with Ilona Štěpánová-Kurzová . In the 1960s he performed increasingly as a concert pianist. From 1970 he taught at the Prague Conservatory and from 1974 to 1979 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava .

He composed five operas and two ballets , a symphony , a string concerto, a concerto for wind instruments and timpani, an oboe concerto, a concerto for oboe, harpsichord and strings, chamber music works, three organ sonatas, piano works, songs and song cycles, an oratorio , a mass and several cantatas .

He also appeared as a librettist and writer of short stories and an autobiography. His son Lukáš Hurník is also a composer.
