The Ilster is a tributary of the Örtze . It rises east of Töpingen (a district of Munster ), and then flows further north of "Haus Ilster", part of the formerly independent municipality of Ilster, now also a district of Munster. It crosses Kreisstrasse 49 and is caught in a reservoir. Shortly afterwards it flows into the Örtze at the Munster-Nord military training area , north of Breloh (district of Munster). The Ilster is five kilometers long and has a maximum width of two meters.

The river "Histro" mentioned by Cassius Dio (55 / 10a) is equated among historians with the Ilster. In this passage it is mentioned that the Germanic tribe of the Hermunduren was looking for a new home there. This process is described as "wandering around" in the German translation.
