Infarm ( In door Urban Farm ing GmbH) is a in 2013 in Berlin based start-up company , which with the concept of vertical farming organic herbs produced and vegetables has established directly in restaurants or retail establishments and sold marketed or there.

History and description

The company was founded by three Israelis (Guy Galonska, Erez Galonska and Osnat Michaeli) in August 2013 in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg , Glogauer Straße 6. The starting point was her wish to always have fresh herbs ready for her own use.

With equity, they eventually started growing seeds that had not been chemically or genetically treated in a simple converted trailer . Then the seedlings were placed in incubators (modular system) placed one on top of the other , where they can grow under optimal conditions with regard to light, moisture and nutrients. The growth processes are digitally monitored and controlled and therefore require few staff. The declared aim was very early on to “create a network of farms with Infarm that produces as close as possible to the end consumer.” The concept was discussed and refined in the general public with the involvement of biologists and cooks.

In spring 2018, investors were found who provided the start-up with additional financial aid of 20 million euros .

For infarming with the motto "we create an environment in which natural growth processes are reproduced as precisely as possible" (and without long delivery routes), the company founders already had 50 Berlin restaurants by the beginning of 2018, for example celebrity chef Tim Raue and Israeli Meir Adoni, who opened the Leyla restaurant in Berlin-Kreuzberg (Möckernstrasse / Hallesche Strasse) in October 2018 , found tenants of two of their farms.

In addition, the entrepreneurs gained supermarkets and warehouses in Berlin such as Edeka and REWE branches as well as Metro AG as users.

Infarm has set up its glass, transparent high-rise shelves in these companies, which they finance themselves. In these cabinets, the plants grow until they are ready for harvest in front of the customer . The herbs and vegetables, which can also come from other climatic zones, are harvested twice a week by Infarm employees and sold with their roots at the fresh counter. "In this way, important nutrients and vitamins are retained for longer until the customer removes the roots at home," says a corresponding explanation.

But there are already partners in other places such as Düsseldorf , Hanover , Hamburg , Rostock and Wiesbaden . Negotiations were ongoing in autumn 2018 with other interested parties from German cities as well as from Zurich , Copenhagen and Paris .

The company's founders pursued the goal of looking after 1,000 indoor farms in Europe by mid-2019, expanding the research center in Spandau and adding chilli and cabbage to the range, for example .

In July 2018, Infarm employed 150 people.
