The call center agent Cooper is late for work and is called to his boss Maureen's office. As she is about to release him, there is a high-pitched noise and everyone collapses unconscious.
When Cooper comes to, he finds himself wrapped in a cocoon . He breaks free and is instantly attacked by a huge beetle, which he can barely defeat. Cooper notices that everyone else in the building is trapped in cocoons as well. He first frees Maureen, who immediately runs out of the house to check on her daughter Sara, who is waiting in the car. Cooper follows her, and they find that all the people outside the building have been woven into cocoons. When Maureen calls for her daughter, she is kidnapped by a huge flying beetle. Cooper frees Sara and, together with her, a few other people in the house, including the weather fairy Cindy, the older Albert and his hard-of-hearing son Hugo and Leechee. The group goes to the roof of the house. From there they see a reddish cloud rising in the distance, which they suspect to be the nest of the insects. A swarm of winged beetles flies over the roof in the direction of the cloud. Except for Leechee, everyone is hiding, but she is ignored by the giant insects flying directly over her. The group concludes that the beetles cannot see anything and only react to sounds.
Together with Sara, Cindy, Albert and Hugo, Cooper sets off to see his father Ethan, an Army veteran who has set up a bunker in his house. Leechee stays behind to free other people. On the way, the group walks past Albert's house to check on his wife, but finds her dead. They decide to go ahead and check on Cindy's brother. When you arrive at his house, you will find a few cocoons that are neatly laid out in a row. Then they discover Cindy's brother, who has transformed into a huge hybrid creature of insect and human, and carries more cocoons out of the house. The group is attacked, but can kill the hybrid. Albert is stung, however. They realize that the giant insects can infect humans and transform them into hybrid creatures. You spend the night in the house. Cindy tries to seduce Cooper, who rejects her because he has fallen in love with Sara.
As they move on the next day, Cindy loses her nerve and attracts a swarm of beetles with her loud screams. Cindy is killed while Sara is dragged towards the nest. Cooper arrives at his father's house with Albert and Hugo. They free him from the cocoon and discuss a plan to destroy the giant beetle's nest. Suddenly Albert turns into a hybrid creature, attacks the group and is then killed.
The next day, Cooper sets off alone towards the insect's nest. On the way, however, he is captured by a group of outlaws who put him in prison for fear of being infected. There he meets a Puerto Rican who tells him that Leechee has saved him. Leechee's group also discovered that the gas emitted by the beetles is flammable. However, in an explosion during an investigation into the insects, much of Leechee's group, including herself, was killed. The outlaws have also captured Ethan and Hugo. When they also want to lock them in the cells, a scuffle breaks out. The Puerto Rican transforms into a hybrid and is killed, the outlaws can also be eliminated. However, it is revealed that Ethane was also infected by the beetles. Cooper, Ethan and Hugo make their way to the nest armed and armed with explosives. Ethan wants to protect his son from being harmed too, knocks Hugo down shortly before the goal and ties Cooper to a tree.
Meanwhile, Sara wakes up inside the nest and discovers that the beetles with the cocoons are feeding their queen and that she has already laid innumerable eggs. Ethan gets into the nest, finds Sara and decides to kill the queen with a bomb. Hugo has come to in the meantime and frees Cooper. They rush to Sara and Ethan in the nest. The four of them track down the queen. When she feels threatened, she emits a high pitched sound that paralyzes the group to the ground, except for Hugo, who is not susceptible to the noise due to his hearing loss. Hugo grabs the bomb and throws it into the queen's mouth. This then falls silent and the group wakes up again. Hugo and Sara flee the nest. Cooper takes the detonator for the bomb from his father, since he can no longer and does not want to escape. Ethan transforms into a hybrid shortly afterwards and is killed by Cooper. Cooper finally manages to detonate the bomb, but he is very close to the explosion, so that he is knocked unconscious to the ground.
A little later, Cooper wakes up in a hospital bed. Sara and Hugo are with him and open a window so that Cooper can hear that outside there is again the chirping of birds instead of the whirring of the giant beetles. The three of them take to the streets and begin to free the people from their cocoons. Cooper and Sara admit their love for each other when Hugo suddenly turns around in shock and shows down the street, visibly shocked.
