Info ZIP

Info-ZIP is a group of programmers, the four open source - computer programs for handling ZIP archives developed. Her work began in 1989 with variants of the original PKZIP tool by Phil Katz, which had just been released . This itself was soon further developed (different compression method) and remained widespread, and an essential aim of the work of the project was always maximum compatibility with PKZIP, i. H. ZIP archives created with PKZIP should be able to be read and unzipped with the Info-ZIP's Unzip program , and ZIP archives created by Info-ZIP's Zip should be readable and unzipped with PKZIP. Another objective was to porting to möchlichst many other operating systems , particularly Unix-like , while PKZIP still on MS-DOS and compatible limited.

Many programs that use the ZIP algorithm use the Info-Zip source code for the actual compression . Two Info-ZIP developers were involved in the development of the PNG data format for graphics, which replaced GIF .

The programs

  • Zip and UnZip handle ZIP archives in the command line under PC-compatible DOS (such as MS-DOS , PC DOS , and many more ) and compatible operating systems such as OS / 2 and Windows (especially Windows 9x , but also under Windows NT ). However, there are native versions for OS / 2 and Windows, as well as for a number of Unix-like operating systems like * BSD ( z. B. FreeBSD / NetBSD / OpenBSD and macOS / Darwin ) and Linux , as well as VMS , Amiga DOS , Atari TOS / MiNT and some more, and even different processor architectures are considered. They were last  updated in 2008 ( Zip  3.0) and 2009 ( UnZip 6.0) and are thus part of current Linux distributions. Zip compressed, UnZip unpacked or provides information about the contents of a ZIP archive as ZipInfo (command zipinfoor unzip ‑Z). On Info-ZIP's page about milestones of the past, UnZip publications are first mentioned from 1989 onwards, and Zip does not appear until 1992 .
  • WiZ offers a graphical user interface for Zip and UnZip under Windows (last only for 32-bit, not Windows 3.x ), was last updated in 2005 ( WiZ  5.03).
  • MacZip offers a graphical interface for Zip and UnZip under classic Mac OS . According to Info-ZIP it was last updated in 2001 ( MacZip  1.06). His developer and maintainer at the time said goodbye to these roles and stated that he would no longer develop the MacZip any further. The last version of classic Mac OS is Mac OS 9.2.2 from 2001.
  • Since Mac OS X Panther (10.3, 2003) the archiving program ( Archive Utility.appsince Mac OS X Leopard , before that BOMArchiveHelper.app) has been included in the macOS operating system (from 1999 to 2012 “Mac OS X” and until 2016 “OS X”). It can unzip zip files as well as compress directories and files (via the context menu ).
    Info-Zip ( zipand unzip) is also included in the BSD part of macOS, but is only reasonably accessible to the user via Terminal.app .
