Ingressive (phonetics)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In phonetics, ingressive is a sound in which the phonation current flows against the normal direction of flow (cf. egressive ) into an oral air chamber.

There are ingressive implosives and ingressive clicks , also called clicks .

Pure pulmonary- inressive ( inspiratory ) sounds, in which the air flows into the lungs, can be produced by humans, but they are only found in a few languages and even there only fulfill secondary linguistic functions (e.g. as interjections ).
