The Institute of Christ the King and High Priest (Institutum Christi Regis Summi Sacerdotis) is a society of apostolic life in the Roman Catholic Church . The institute, which consists of secular canons , was founded on September 1, 1990 by the young priests Gilles Wach and Phillip Mora and canonically established by Bishop Cyrill Obamba in the diocese of Mouila (Gabon). The institute still maintains various mission stations in Gabon. Shortly afterwards, the institute's motherhouse was relocated to Gricigliano near Florence with the permission of the then Archbishop of Florence, Silvano Cardinal Piovanelli . The Adoration Sisters of the Royal Heart of Jesus have existed as a female branch since 2001 .

The institute currently has over 100 priests and over 90 seminarians (as of 2017). Pope Benedict XVI on October 7, 2008, granted the community the status of a society of apostolic life under papal law in canonial form. The priests of the institute are called " canons ".

Society of Apostolic Life

The members live in community and celebrate the divine office together in Latin . The institute maintains the extraordinary form of the Roman rite based on the Motu proprio Summorum Pontificum of Pope Benedict XVI. and is consecrated to Christ the King and High Priest. The Immaculate Mother of God Mary, as well as the hll. Francis de Sales , Benedict of Nursia and Thomas Aquinas are patrons of the community.

The Christ King and High Priest Institute is also active in Koblenz, Traunstein, Bad Reichenhall and Altötting. It has its own international seminary in Gricigliano. Candidates for priesthood from more than ten countries, also from the German-speaking area, are trained there.

Oblates also belong to the institute , who assist the canons of the institute in practical, administrative and artistic tasks and receive minor ordinations. The priests of the institute devote themselves to pastoral care, teaching and mission. Special emphasis is placed on the liturgy and a pastoral approach corresponding to Salesian spirituality.

Affiliated to the institute is the Sacred Heart Community, which is organized like a third order and aims to make the institute's spirituality fruitful for lay people .

26 years after its inception, the community has branches in 70 dioceses in Germany , Switzerland , Sweden , Italy , the United States , France , Belgium , Spain , Ireland , England , Gabon and the island of Mauritius .
