Rudolf Michael Schmitz (born March 22, 1957 in Eitorf , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a priest and vicar general of the Institute Christ the King and High Priest .

Life

Rudolf Michael Schmitz studied theology and philosophy at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe in Rome. On 10 October 1982 he received in Rome by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger the priesthood . Schmitz became a member of the Catholic Student Association K.St.V. Arminia Bonn in KV . At the Pontifical Gregorian University he received his doctorate theologiae in 1988 with a thesis on the relationship between Christ and the Church in ecclesiology in the interwar period . From 1983 to 1985 he worked as a chaplain in pastoral care in Neuss and from 1988 to 1990 in Remscheid . He then studied canon law in Munich and was a research assistant to Winfried Aymans . In parallel to a teaching position at the seminary of the Christ the King and High Priest Institute near Florence, he studied canon law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and obtained a licentiate in canon law. In 2014 he received his doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University with a thesis on the legal history and the legal form of the secular canons under Patrick Valdrini.

In 1995 Schmitz became attaché to the Apostolic Nunciature in Kyrgyzstan and head of the Catholic Cultural Center in the capital Bishkek . The Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University of Bishkek appointed him professor of "History of World Religions"; he was the first priest of the Roman Catholic Church to be a professor at a university in the former Soviet Union. In 1997 Schmitz was awarded the academic title of Professor of Philosophy by the Republic of Kyrgyzstan.

After giving up his previous position as diocesan priest , he then joined the Institute of Christ the King and High Priest on September 8, 2000, was initially responsible for the German-speaking countries and Vicar General of the Prior General Msgr. Gilles Wach , later also Provincial for the branches of the Society in the United States. While maintaining his previous duties, he has also been Pro-Provincial of Germany and Ireland since 2010 and also a delegate for Libreville in Gabon since 2012. In 2015 he was appointed Provincial for France. He continues to be Vicar General and also a delegate for Germany and the United States.

Schmitz is the Magistral Chaplain of the Order of Malta and a corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy for Theology . Since 2015 he has also been a Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite of the Republic of Gabon. He has numerous publications in various languages.

Pope John Paul II granted him the title of Chaplain to His Holiness on September 7, 1998 .
