The Institute for Labor Law and Industrial Relations in the European Union (IAAEU) is an interdisciplinary research institute in Germany and combines the analysis of labor market economics and labor law issues.

history

On October 1, 1983, the Institute for Labor Law and Industrial Relations in the European Community (IAAEG) was founded by Rolf Birk , based in Schloss Quint in Trier . The aim was to enable a holistic view of industrial relations and labor law by an interdisciplinary research team that combines economic and legal approaches. In 1988, in addition to the already existing legal working group, an economics working group was formed under the direction of Dieter Sadowski . In 1985 the institute joined the University of Trier as an independent, scientific institution and in 2003 relocated its premises to its Campus II. In 2013 it was renamed the Institute for Labor Law and Industrial Relations in the European Union (IAAEU).

research

The IAAEU conducts research at the interface between European and national labor law and the economic analysis of labor relations. The focus is on the fragmentation of the world of work, the change in work relationships, mobility of the workforce and aspects of the welfare state . In accordance with the interdisciplinary scientific approach, the board of directors consists of two professors who represent the legal and economic perspective in research. A junior professorship for economic analysis of law is also represented on the academic staff. With this interdisciplinary research profile, the IAAEU closes a gap in the German research landscape.

In addition to the regular publication of the research results in international journals , compilations and monographs, the institute issues a number of other publications. These include the discussion series "IAAEU Discussion Paper Series in Economics" (formerly: Quintessenzen), the publication series "Studies on Foreign, Comparative and International Labor Law" published by Nomos and the newsletter "Arbeitsrecht aktuell", which IAAEU took on in 2011. Regular events serve to facilitate cross-border scientific exchange, for example in the context of the lecture series "Economic Colloquium at the IAAEU" or the series of events "International Labor Standards" organized jointly with the Hugo Sinzheimer Institute for Labor Law (HSI) .

Library and European database

With over 80,000 volumes and electronic media, the IAAEU library has a special collection, unique in Europe, on international and national labor law in all EU member states, as well as on industrial relations, labor economics , human resources economics and human resources in the EU and the USA. The library is open to the public and with its reference inventory, including 340 current journals from 25 countries, 54 of which are solely owned, enables comparative studies.

The "European database" provided by the IAAEU offers a special extension of the search options, a comprehensive directory for articles on labor law and court decisions in the member states of the EU and selected third countries . The database has existed since 1997 and is available in German, English and French.
