The Institute for Entomology in the Ruhr Area e. V. ( IFIR ) is a non-profit association in the fields of scientific entomology and practical species and nature conservation . The association is supported by volunteers.

Historical

The institute emerged from the Entomological Society in Essen , based at what was then the Ruhrland Museum . After the museum was restructured, the Entomological Society could no longer use the premises there and in 1986 moved to temporary premises in Bochum . It was not until 2005 that the LWL-Industriemuseum offered the opportunity to store the library, collection and work equipment in a public place and to use a meeting and lecture room. At the same time, it was renamed “Institute for Insect Science in the Ruhr Area (IFIR)”.

aims

The focus of the work is the research of insect fauna - especially butterflies - in the Ruhr area . In addition to day and night moths including the so-called small butterflies , other groups of insects such as dragonflies , beetles and wild bees are also taken into account. Another goal is biotope protection.

research

In addition to the faunistic recording of insects in the Ruhr area, special scientific questions are also dealt with. This applies in particular to the systematics and phylogenetics of certain butterfly groups such as Psychidae , Satyrinae (Erebia) and the genera Melitaea and Euphydryas . Various preparation and examination techniques are used for this, such as macro and microphotography , microscopy , morphometric analyzes and DNA sequencing . Further research concerns the fauna and ecology of the butterflies on the island of Sulawesi and the butterfly fauna of the Ligurian Alps .
