The Institute for Sound Research (ISF, ARI) is a non-university research facility of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . It was founded in 1972 as the Commission for Sound Research, converted into a research center in 1994 and has existed since 2000 as the Institute for Sound Research.

Research priorities

The ISF is a multidisciplinary research institution that scientifically examines issues in the field of acoustics . In the context of application-oriented basic research , connections along the "sound chain", from generation to propagation to perception , are explored. The institute deals with the following areas of acoustics:

Current research projects include the investigation and improvement of the localization of sound sources in wearers of neuroprostheses , so-called cochlear implants , the modeling and improvement of noise protection measures in car and rail traffic , the phonetic analysis of regional dialects and the mathematical modeling of language production systems; Furthermore, the improvement of perceptual coding algorithms (such as MP3 ) by means of mathematical models, based on the investigation of dynamic properties of the hearing , in particular the feedback between the peripheral and more central processing stages, as well as the further development of the mathematical theory of signal representation optimized for Questions about the production and perception of sound . In order to be able to create precise acoustic models and efficient methods, the integration of application-oriented and numerical mathematics, signal processing and methods of artificial intelligence is essential. The interdisciplinary approach of the institute allows the development of innovations based on the synergy effects of multidisciplinary research, which in turn stimulate the individual research areas. In the basic research developed methods are also implemented in software development for practical use.

The institute is headed by Peter Balazs .
