Sorbian Institute
The Sorbian Institute ( sorbisch ) researches the language, culture and history of the Sorbs / Wends in Upper and Lower Lusatia . The non-university institute collects and archives the necessary materials, which are also made available to the public. Today's two-country institute in Saxony and Brandenburg was created in 1992 from the former Institute for Sorbian Folk Research ( ). This was founded on May 1, 1951 under the direction of Pawoł Nowotny in Bautzen and from August 1, 1952 was affiliated to the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (from 1972 Academy of Sciences of the GDR ).
The Institute
The head office of the institute is in Bautzen (Budyšin), one office is in Cottbus (Chóśebuz). There are currently a total of 15 posts available for researchers and 11 for scientific, technical and administrative employees.
The institute has published the scientific journal Lětopis since 1952 , currently every six months , and two series of publications. The “Writings of the Sorbian Institute / Spisy serbskeho instituta” (63 volumes until 2017) are published by Domowina-Verlag .
The employees of the institute take on teaching assignments at universities and other educational institutions in Germany and abroad, whereby the focus is on the cooperation with the Institute for Sorabic Studies at the University of Leipzig .
The Sorbian Central Library (Serbska centralna biblioteka) and the Sorbian cultural archive (Serbski kulturny archiw) are also located at the Bautzen site .
