The Instituto Federal de Goiás (IFG) is a federal institute for education , science and technology in the state of Goiás in Brazil.

history

Overall, the IFG looks back on more than a hundred years of history, taking into account its predecessors (founded in 1909 in the former capital of the federal state " Cidade de Goiás "). The Federal Institute was founded through the transformation of the Federal Center for Technological Education in Goiás (abbreviated CEFET -GO, from the Portuguese “Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Goiás”). In the course of the transformation and reorganization of the network of Brazilian federal universities for technological education, the CEFET-GO was converted into the IFG on December 29, 2008. Currently (April 2016) almost 20,000 students study on 14 active campuses , with the largest in the state capital Goiânia , which is also where the new headquarters of the rectorate is located. The other active campuses are located in the cities of Jataí , Uruaçu , Inhumas , Itumbiara , Aparecida de Goiânia , Anápolis , Formosa and Luziânia . The number of students more than tripled compared to 2006. Further campuses are being planned.

Course offers

The IFG mainly offers courses in technological areas at the level of Applied Bachelor courses, known in Brazil as "Tecnólogo". Teacher training is currently being expanded significantly. In addition, there is a grammar school upper level with around 400 students, in which, in addition to school education, various vocational training courses in various technical areas are offered. Further courses of study, such as two engineering courses in mechanical engineering and automation technology, are also offered; a master’s course in sustainable process technology (Portuguese: Tecnologia de Processos Sustentáveis) began in the second semester of 2012 (in cooperation with Trier University , long-term partner of the IFG).

As a federal institute, the IFG does not charge any tuition fees , half of the coveted study places are reserved for graduates of public schools for social reasons. A twelve-year school education is required as a prerequisite for the "Tecnólogo" and "Bachelor" courses, plus an entrance examination. Depending on the course, there are between two and sixty applicants for each study place.

Courses offered at the Goiânia campus

  • 1. Master: Sustainable process technologies
  • 2. Mechanical engineering, engineering in control and automation techniques, environmental engineering
  • 3. Graduate courses (Applied Bachelor level): Agro-industrial chemistry, chemical process technology, network technology, urban transport, land surveying, building construction, civil engineering, hotel industry, tourism, geographical information systems, industrial mechanical engineering and maintenance, environmental remediation.
  • 4. Teacher training: mathematics, history, physics, music
  • 5. Technician training: electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics, mining, building construction, traffic, environmental control, musical instruments, internet, gastronomy

Germany

The IFG has been cooperating with the Birkenfeld Environmental Campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences in the field of sustainable process technologies since 2005 . This collaboration was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2009 . As part of this cooperation program, over 20 students from the Trier University of Applied Sciences studied at the IFG, mainly in project work, research projects, as well as bachelor, diploma and master theses. In return, 15 Brazilian students from the IFG were able to carry out project work and research projects on the Birkenfeld environmental campus with DAAD support.

A master’s degree in sustainable process technologies was prepared with the support of the German partners of the Trier University of Applied Sciences and was accredited by the Brazilian Ministry of Education at the end of 2011 - the course began in August 2012.

With the support of the German Embassy in Brasilia, the IFG has been organizing the annual "German-Brazilian meeting on sustainable production in the Cerrado" since 2009.

In October 2013, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the IFG and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH for cooperation within the framework of the bilateral ProBiogas project. This "project to promote the energetic utilization of biogas in Brazil" has a term of five years and is being implemented in cooperation with the Brazilian Ministry of Cities.

Since the beginning of 2013, with the help of the German Embassy in Brasilia and the Goethe-Institut in São Paulo, the IFG has been hosting a series of monthly screenings of German films under the name “Cinema Alemão no IFG und Deutsches Kino”.
