The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld (UCB) is located about 5 km south of the city of Birkenfeld in the upper Nahe valley , in the Neubrücke district of the municipality of Hoppstädten-Weiersbach and is an external location of the Trier University of Applied Sciences with around 2,400 students, 289 employees and 59 professors. Norbert Kuhn was President of Trier University of Applied Sciences until March 31, 2019. On September 15, 2019, Dorit Schumann took over as President of the university. Vice President for Research is Stefan Diemer and Vice President for Studies and Teaching is Marc Regier.
Organizationally, the UCB is divided into two departments: environmental economics / environmental law and environmental planning / environmental technology. In the first-mentioned department, the mainly economically and legally-oriented courses are located, in the second-mentioned, the more technically-oriented ones. The UCB houses eight institutes and five competence centers (which work similarly to institutes), there are also other research projects and a number of student initiatives. The campus area with eight student residences enables people to live, study and work together in one place. The environmental campus Birkenfeld is the only German university to be supplied exclusively with renewable energy such as electricity and heating.
In January 2008 the university was named “Selected Location 2008”. The campus is now officially one of the “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” recognized by the “Germany - Land of Ideas” initiative and its project partner Deutsche Bank. The Trier University of Applied Sciences took part in the competition with its Birkenfeld Environmental Campus as one of around 1,500 locations.
history
Military hospital
The 98th General Hospital in Neubrücke, now part of the local community of Hoppstädten-Weiersbach , was built near the larger American site in Baumholder . The 44-hectare hospital area was opened in 1952 and had 1,000 beds and various medical specialist stations, including surgery, dentistry, orthopedics, radiology, rehabilitation and ophthalmology. From the 1970s to 1984 the hospital was closed for cost reasons, after which it was held for further use.
The main building complex ran on both sides in a comb shape around a central aisle in an east-west direction, in the southern appendix there were supply facilities (casino, supermarket, cinema, church), in the northern, at least in recent years, the dental practice. In the eastern part there were team quarters, in the west in the free-standing buildings a primary school and apartment blocks. To the south of the railroad tracks, there were storage / goods handling halls that were used until the 1990s to lock the hospital's furniture.
Interesting are the extensive railway installations for hospital trains the Army . The tracks that extend to the campus are now removed. The Neubrücke train station on the Nahe route connecting Mainz and Saarbrücken is, however, in the immediate vicinity. The Böhmer Airfield , today an airfield with a glider sports club , was also located in the same village .
The Americans finally gave up the hospital in 1994, and the buildings were empty until 1996.
Environmental campus Birkenfeld
The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld was initiated by the former chief administrative officer of the district Birkenfeld , Ernst parts, on the grounds of the former US military hospital built. The UCB became a showcase conversion project in the Hunsrück, as an area abandoned by the American armed forces could be used again. The three founding professors were Michael Eulenstein , Hanns Köhler and Marott Bronder .
The area and the buildings were renovated or rebuilt in the 1990s. This is how the Birkenfeld location of the Trier University of Applied Sciences or the Birkenfeld Environment Campus ( UCB for short ) was created .
Some American blocks of flats and an elementary school were still in use until the end of 2009.
The church on the site was used until the end of the last century. The cinema complex served for a long time as a lecture hall with student cinema activities, the American retail store existed until 2009. In 2010 the building complex was demolished in order to erect a communication building with a multi-purpose hall, seminar and band rehearsal rooms and a daycare center, which opened on June 28, 2012 has been. The buildings at the UCB still have four-digit "American house numbers".

Student Initiatives
For freshmen who start their studies in the winter semester , the course starts with so-called Flying Days projects . These are organized by students in higher semesters for freshmen. The former can earn ECTS points for managing Flying Days projects .
The certification of the UCB according to ISO 14001 , an environmental management standard , is being promoted by the students . Every year, UCB students around the world are involved in project work, for example within the framework of the traveling university , which has already led them to China , Poland , Brazil or America .
