Insulysin (IDE) (also: insulin-degrading enzyme , previously: insulinase ) is an enzyme that occurs in bacteria and eukaryotes . In vertebrates, IDE is able to break down , in addition to the protein insulin, several other extracellular proteins such as beta-amyloid and somatostatin and thus render them harmless. IDE is expressed in all tissue types in humans.

Studies in Han Chinese, German and Muscovites suggest an association of polymorphisms in the IDE - gene with the formation of a metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus type 2. Furthermore, low levels of expression of IDE statistically with the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease , respectively. Insulysin is also a gateway for infection with the varicella zoster virus .
