description

The Warsaw Poster Biennale was founded in 1966 on the initiative of Józef Mroszczak and Henryk Tomaszewski , who at the time both taught as professors at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and were the leading representatives of Polish poster art . The global umbrella organization for graphic design and visual communication (ico-D) took over the patronage of the event .

The poster competition, which is taking place at the same time as the exhibition, is considered a prestigious cyclical art event by graphic designers and critics around the world. Each time, the jury for the competition is composed of renowned graphic and poster artists from all over the world. Prizes will be awarded in the categories of cultural posters , advertising posters , ideological posters and debuts ( “golden debut” ). In addition, other honors and special prizes will be given to the artists as part of the Biennale, such as the Excellence Award from the global umbrella organization ico-D and the award for Best Theater Poster from the Polish Stage Artists Association. The winning posters will be exhibited in the Wilanów Poster Museum throughout the summer.

The most famous winners of the competition include Pierre Bernard , Roman Cieślewicz , Shigeo Fukuda , Milton Glaser , Hans Hillmann , Jan Lenica , Uwe Loesch , Waldemar Świerzy , Ikkō Tanaka , Henryk Tomaszewski and Andy Warhol .

On May 15, 1968, on the occasion of the Second Poster Biennale, the Polish postal administration issued a two-part stamp set with posters by two well-known Polish artists. The commemorative stamps with a face value of 60 Groszy and 2.50 złoty show the poster "Peace" by Henryk Tomaszewski with the motif dove of peace and an advertising poster designed by Jan Lenica for a staging of the opera Faust by Charles Gounod in the Warsaw Teatr Wielki .

In 2016 the Warsaw Poster Biennial celebrated its 50th anniversary.
