Goals and implementation

The main goals of the International Children's Book Day are:

  • international communication through children's and youth literature,
  • To enable children worldwide (easier) access to books with literary and artistic demands,
  • Creating conditions for the publication and distribution of high quality children's books,
  • Support and further training for people with an interest in children's and youth literature,
  • Stimulation for scientific debate and discussion about children's literature.

Every year a different national section of IBBY takes over the organization of the day. The organizing section determines a specific topic, hires a children's book author from their country to write a “Message for International Children's and Young People's Book Day”, and recruits an illustrator to design a suitable poster .

The national IBBY sections disseminate the message written by the host country with the help of the media and also usually organize numerous activities in cooperation with schools and libraries . International Children's Book Day is often celebrated with special events, such as presentations by authors and illustrators, book readings , writing competitions or awarding of book prizes .
