Mika Launis

Mika Launis (born 1949 ) is a Finnish illustrator and graphic artist.

Life

Mika Launis studied graphic design at the Aalto University of Art and Design in Helsinki . His thesis was the illustration of a children's book written in Nordsámi .

Launis works as a graphic designer. He created a number of book covers, including illustrated children's books for the Finnish edition of Harry Potter novels, and designed the first Finnish postage stamps in the euro currency . In 2000 his design was selected for the poster for the International Children's Book Day. In 1998 and 2002 Launis was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Prize .

Dove of peace

In 1974, Launis created the white dove on a blue background from a photo studio recording for a poster campaign by the Finnish Peace Committee. The pigeon model lost a tail feather during the shoot, creating a special silhouette. The poster was hanging in Helsinki when the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe was signed in the summer of 1975 . The peace dove was selected in 1976 by the Federal Republican Committee for Peace, Disarmament and Cooperation as a symbol for a demonstration in Bonn and has since been widely used .
