The Hamburg Symposium Sport, Economy and Media is a scientific conference that is held annually in Hamburg. The focus of the event is on sport , its economic effects and the connection to the media . The symposium tries to achieve a connection between scientific knowledge and practical experience. The venue for the symposium is the Millerntor Stadium in Hamburg .

History / development

The Hamburg Symposium Sport, Economy and Media was held for the first time in 2001. Emerging from an initiative of the Hamburg Sports Office, it was intended to position the sports city of Hamburg on a scientific level as part of Hamburg's Olympic application ( Olympic Games 2012 ). The aim was to establish the symposium as part of a competence center for sports development and thus to incorporate current scientific findings into the sport-political discussion in the city. After the failure of the Olympic application in 2003, the symposium was initially held as an event by the Hamburg Sports Office, but in the following years it was increasingly supported by volunteer work and organizationally outsourced from the Sports Office. The organizing committee of the symposium includes Martin-Peter Büch (Saarland University & Director of the BISp a. D.), Christian Hinzpeter (Hinzpeter Wagner), Wolfgang Maennig (University of Hamburg) and Hans-Jürgen Schulke (Macromedia University for Media and Communication, Hamburg ) on. In recent years the symposium has developed from a workshop with around 25 participants to a congress-like event with 20-25 speakers and around 150 participants from universities, media, business and politics. Until 2011, the venue for the symposium was the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. Since 2012 the symposium has been held in the ballroom and press area of the main grandstand of the Millerntor stadium of FC St. Pauli . A conference proceedings have been published for each of the previous events (see references).

Philosophy of the event

The Hamburg International Symposium on Sport, Economy and Media is based on the philosophy “Science meets Practice”. The event would therefore like to create a connection between knowledge from science and the experiences of decision-makers from practice in sport, media, business and politics. Accordingly, the focus is on the discourse between science and practice. Following this philosophy, a participation fee will not be charged at the symposium, the event should be open to all interested parties.

The cornerstones of the event's brand are its internationality, major sporting events and the city of Hamburg. The symposium is to be set up internationally by inviting internationally renowned speakers. This endeavor can be illustrated by the number of international speakers from the last few years: twelve in 2007, eleven in 2008 and eight in 2009 international speakers at the symposium.

The technical focus is on major sporting events as "lighthouses of sport", so that each selected topic should create a direct reference to major sporting events. By specializing in major sporting events, the symposium has created a unique selling point in the international sports congress market.

The third building block of the symposium's brand is the direct reference to the city of Hamburg. As an event originally initiated by the Hamburg Sports Office, the aim is to address current sport-political issues in the Hanseatic city . To this end, selected speakers and guests from Hamburg are invited to the symposium every year. The symposium creates a further direct link to the city of Hamburg through its funding by the Sports City Hamburg, Hamburg Wasser , the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the University of Hamburg . As a result, it is anchored in the public administration and the free economy of the metropolitan region. At the European level there is a cooperation with the europe direct Infopoint Europe Hamburg.
