Horst R. Schmidt

Horst Rudolf Schmidt (born November 19, 1941 in Nuremberg ) is a German football official .

Life

The trained administrative specialist was already a member of the organizing committee at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , and two years later at the first soccer World Cup in Germany. Since then he has worked on the key bodies at FIFA and UEFA for the organization of World and European Championships. From 1976 to 1992 he was a department head and director at the DFB headquarters. He then was DFB General Secretary until 2007 . From January 2001 to summer 2006 he was also the executive vice-president of the organizing committee for the 2006 soccer world championship in Germany. On November 3, 2015, the Frankfurt am Main public prosecutor's office announced that it was investigating Schmidt on suspicion of tax evasion. In 2007, Schmidt had signed the tax return for the 2006 World Cup, in which participation in the cultural program was listed as operating expenses. In May 2018, the public prosecutor brought charges against Schmidt.
In October 2018, the Frankfurt Regional Court rejected the opening of main proceedings for tax evasion against the two former DFB Presidents Theo Zwanziger and Wolfgang Niersbach as well as the former DFB General Secretary Horst R. Schmidt.

The Swiss Federal Prosecutor's Office has initiated a criminal case against Schmidt on suspicion of fraud, dishonesty, money laundering and embezzlement on November 6, 2015 beginning of August 2019 took place the indictment for fraud, the accusations of money laundering had previously dropped a month. The focus of the proceedings are the circumstances of a payment of 10 million francs to the entrepreneur Robert Louis-Dreyfus , who had previously made this amount available to Franz Beckenbauer as a loan.

From 2007 to 2013 Schmidt held the office of DFB treasurer. He was also an advisor to the organizing committee for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa .

Since 2007 Schmidt has been a board member of Euro-Sportring , a foundation that organizes international sports tournaments for youth and popular sports clubs in Europe.

Horst R. Schmidt is married and has lived in Aschaffenburg for many years .

Awards

In July 2005 he received the Bavarian Order of Merit . In 2002 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon and in 2013 the 1st class. Schmidt is an honorary member of the German Football Association.
