International heliophysical year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The year 2007 has been declared the International Heliophysical Year (IHY). This was decided by the General Assembly of the United Nations by resolution 60/99 of December 8, 2006.

The IHY was the consistent continuation of the International Geophysical Year 1957 (IGY), which 2007 was 50 years old. The research activities will be extended to the sun and the heliosphere , i.e. to the area of space that is dominated by the hot, ionized gas (the plasma of the solar wind ) emanating from the sun .

The objectives of the IHY, which was officially opened in Vienna on February 19, 2007 , were:

  1. Improvement of the understanding of heliophysical processes that determine the influence of the sun on the earth and the heliosphere.
  2. Expansion of international cooperation in the tradition of the International Geophysical Year 1957.
  3. To illustrate the relevance of earth and space research to society and to inspire future researchers.
