Internet.org or Free Basics was founded as a partnership between Facebook and leading IT companies ( Samsung , Ericsson , MediaTek , Opera Software , Nokia , Qualcomm ) in 2013. In September 2015 it was renamed as an app in Free Basics .

According to its own statements, the initiative has officially set itself the goal of connecting the remaining two thirds of the world's population without an Internet connection to the Internet, whereby the actual intentions are critically questioned. The Internet.org service has made it possible since 2014 in selected countries to use some website offers such as Wikipedia , Facebook, AccuWeather and Google free of charge with mobile devices .

criticism

The project has been criticized from many sides for endangering net neutrality , because the free internet.org offer only makes it easier to access selected websites. In May 2015, Facebook responded and opened the platform to other website providers. However, it is still necessary to register the website on Facebook. Access via internet.org therefore depends on approval from Facebook. The company's underlying guidelines also prohibit the use of encryption protocols such as HTTPS .

In 2016, the program was banned in India because it violated net neutrality.

Partnerships

The project works together with the following mobile phone companies :
