Interpretation ( Latin interpretatio in the general sense "interpretation, translation, explanation") means the understanding or subjectively plausible respected interpretation of something given or at least of something present. This can e.g. B. a statement , a work of art or a social situation, but also something simply found in nature.

Interpretation in art

Interpretation in the sense of art theory and cultural studies is the process in which a literary, musical or visual work of art is laid out or interpreted. In addition to the analysis of the form, interpretation also includes the examination of the subtext .

According to some conceptions, every analysis is already an interpretation. In the performing arts such as music or dance, the performance of a work is always an interpretation; therefore the artist is considered an interpreter .
