Into the West is a 2003 song written for the film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by Howard Shore (music), Fran Walsh and Annie Lennox (both text). It will be sung by Annie Lennox.

The song in the movie

In the film, Into the West, played as a guy. It represents a lamentation over the elves leaving Middle-earth who sail off to the west. The text is based on the end of the film's original novel ( The Lord of the Rings ) and uses text passages from it.

dedication

Peter Jackson , the director of the film, dedicated the song to Cameron Duncan , a New Zealand director who he noticed during the filming, was invited to film and made a great impression on him. Duncan died of bone cancer at the age of 17 just two weeks before the song was released. The first public performance of Into the West was at Duncan's funeral.

Awards

In 2004 Into the West won the Oscar and the Golden Globe , each in the category of Best Movie Song . The song also won a Grammy in 2005 for Best Song Written For Film, Television, or Visual Media. In 2003 it also won the OFTA Award for Best Original Song. In 2004 Into the West was also nominated for the World Soundtrack Award in the category Best Song Written for a Film , but lost to You Will Be My Ain True Love from the film On the Road to Cold Mountain .

Cover versions

Van Canto released a covered version of Into the West on their album Dawn of the Brave in 2014 , Gregorian on their album Epic Chants in 2012 and Will Martin on his album A New World in 2008 . The New Zealand singer Yulia made a cover version of her album title song in 2004. Peter Hollens released Into the West as a single in 2014 .
