Ioan Mackenzie James (often cited as IM James ; born May 23, 1928 ) is a British mathematician who studies topology .

Live and act

James attended St. Paul's School in London and then studied mathematics at Oxford University at Queen's College with JHC Whitehead (whose collected works he published in 1962/3) with a scholarship , specializing in topology. In 1954/55 he was at Princeton University , the University of California, Berkeley and the Institute for Advanced Study . In 1956 he was a Research Fellow at Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University and in 1957 returned to Oxford, where he was until 1969 Reader and from 1959 Senior Research Fellow of St John's College . In 1970 he became Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford and a Fellow of New College. In 1995 he retired.

James dealt in particular with homotopy theory (for example of Stiefel manifolds , bundles of spheres ), partly in collaboration with his teacher Henry Whitehead. He is the editor of an essay on the history of topology, a standard reference.

James has been a Fellow of the Royal Society since 1968 . He is a member of the London Mathematical Society , of which he was treasurer for a long time and of which he was president from 1984 to 1986. In 1959 he received their Junior Berwick Prize and in 1978 their Senior Whitehead Prize. In 1989 he became an honorary professor at the University of Wales . He is an Honorary Fellow of St. John's College, Oxford and an Honorary Doctorate from Aberdeen University . He has been the editor of Topology magazine since it was founded in 1962 .
