Ioannis Kalitzakis ( Greek Ιωάννης Καλιτζάκης ; born February 10, 1966 in Eleusis , Greece ) is a former Greek football player .

Career

Ioannis Kalitzakis, who played in the position of central defender, began his career in his native Elefsina with the Greek club Panelefsiniakos, where he made 106 appearances and 3 goals between 1983 and 1986. In the summer of 1986 Kalitzakis moved to Rhodes for the local Diagoas FC. At Diagoras the player stayed for one season and was used in a total of 18 games in which he was able to score a goal. In 1987, when he switched to the top Greek club Panathinaikos Athens , Kalitzakis finally achieved his breakthrough. In the following ten years he played in the regular formation of his new club and won the Greek championship four times (1990, 1991, 1995, 1996) and the cup six times (1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995). The most successful year in this phase for Kalitzakis was 1996, when he made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League with Panathinaikos and won 1-0 against Ajax there in Amsterdam . In the second leg, however, the team finally lost 3-0 and thus missed a participation in the final for the highest European football award for club teams. In 1997 Kalitzakis moved after 260 games and 15 goals for Panathinaikos to AEK Athens where he was under contract until 2000 and was able to win the cup again. In the summer of 2000 Kalitzakis moved to Ethnikos Asteras where he stayed for one season and then ended his playing career.

Ioannis Kalitzakis was an integral part of the Greek national football team for years and made 71 appearances there. The highlight of his national team career was participation in the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where he was used in all games in the preliminary round.
