Iacobeni (outdated Iacășdorf ; German  Jakobsdorf or Jakeschdorf , Hungarian Jakabfalva ) is a village in the Sibiu district in Transylvania , Romania .

geography

The village is located about 1500 meters away from the main road that runs through the Harbach Valley ( Valea Hârtibaciului ) and connects Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ) with Sighișoara ( Schäßburg ). Iacobeni is located about seventy kilometers north of the district capital Sibiu.

The municipality of Iacobeni consists of five villages: Iacobeni, Movile ( Hundertbüelte ), Netuș ( Neithausen ), Noiștat ( Neustadt ), Stejărișu ( Probstdorf ). In each of these places there is a fortified church .

history

The place in the former Schenker Stuhl was first mentioned in a document in 1309 and was probably founded about a century earlier.

Statistics show that the village prospered economically, according to which Jakobsdorf was the second largest village in the Schenker Stuhl around 1500 and in the 16th century. Until the 1930s, more than half of the population were Transylvanian Saxons . As a result of emigrating to Germany (especially in 1990), their share has decreased significantly to this day.

Iacobeni today

In Iacobeni - like Cincu ( Groß-Schenk ) - the “ Independent Catholic Church ” of Father Don Demidoff, author of the book “The Thorn Priest”, settled in the 1990s . In self-portrayals, Demidoff says that this church is primarily active in charity. This is denied by critics. Demidoff's church operated several facilities in the former Protestant church buildings, which were leased and redesigned for these purposes.

Residents

According to the 2011 census, there were 1615 Romanians , 956 Roma , 34 Germans and 9 Hungarians in the municipality of Iacobeni . In the village of Iacobeni itself, 767 inhabitants were registered in 1992.
