Ioannis Papadimitriou

Ioannis K. Papadimitriou ( Greek Ιωάννης Παπαδημητρίου , also Ioannes Papademetriou ; born August 22, 1904 in Skyros , Greece ; † April 11, 1963 in Athens ) was a Greek classical archaeologist .

Life

Ioannis Papadimitriou studied literature and archeology at the University of Athens and received his diploma in 1926. From 1926 to 1929 he was a research assistant for literary studies and an employee at the library of the Philosophical Faculty. In 1929 he joined the Greek Archaeological Service and supervised excavations in Thebes and on Corfu . Ioannis Papadimitriou began studying archeology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin and received his doctorate there in 1935.

In 1935 he led excavations on the island of Skyros . a. five protogeometric graves discovered. A short time later he became the Ephorus of Antiquities in the Argolis. In 1945 he began excavations at the Temple of Artemis in Brauron . In 1950 he directed the restoration work on the grave of Klytaimnestra in Mycenae . During the reconstruction of the grave dome, the so-called grave circle B was discovered, which he excavated in the following years. The rich grave goods aroused great interest. In 1953 he was honored with the Order of George I for his services to science . Ioannis Papadimitriou also directed the investigations at the temple of Apollon Maleatas and Asclepius in Epidaurus .

In 1946 he received his doctorate from the University of Athens. In 1948 he became Ephorus of the Antiquities of Attica . He led the excavations in the caves of the nymphs on the Pendeli (1952), in the cave of Pan (1957) and at the Theagenes source in Megara (1957-1958). In 1958 he became Director of Historical Monuments and Antiquities in Greece. In July 1959, excavations in Piraeus led by Ioannis Papadimitriou discovered four Greek bronze statues that are now in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus .

Ioannis Papadimitriou was a member of the Rotary Club .
