Iochroma cyaneum is a plant type from the genus of iochroma ( Iochroma ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Iochroma cyaneum is a 1.5 to 3 meter high shrub . Its young twigs are green and densely hairy with branched trichomes . The leaves are egg-shaped to elliptical, 10 to 23 inches long and 5 to 10 inches wide.

The inflorescences consist of 10 to 20 flowers . The calyx is 5 to 9 millimeters long and slightly to significantly enlarged during flowering. The crown is deep purple in color, tubular and 2.5 to 4 inches long. It is more or less hairless, only a few trichomes are located on the crown throat. The stamens are 2.5 to 4 inches long and hairy at the base. The anthers are 3 to 4 millimeters long and contain pollen with a pollen grain diameter of 25 to 33 micrometers. The stylus is 2 to 4 inches long.

The fruit is a conical berry with a length of 1.8 to 2.5 centimeters, the lower third is enclosed by the calyx.

Iochroma cyaneum

Systematics

Phylogenetic investigations classify the species with the species Iochroma cornifolium and Iochroma loxense in a common clade (clade C according to Smith & Baum 2006), according to morphological characteristics Iochroma albianthum and Iochroma schellerupii also belong to this group. Iochroma cyaneum is probably a parent species of the natural hybrid Iochroma ayabacense together with Iochroma lehmannii .

distribution

Specimens of Iochroma cyaneum were mainly collected in southern Ecuador and neighboring Peru . Individual finds are also noted further north in Ecuador. The species grows at altitudes between 1800 and 2500 meters.

use

Cultivars of the species are occasionally used as an ornamental shrub, especially in Great Britain, southern Europe, Australia and California. Well-known cultivars are 'Alba', 'Apricot Belle', 'Indigo', 'Royal Blue', 'Sky King' and 'Woodcote White'.
