features

Vegetative characteristics

Iodanthus pinnatifidus is a perennial herbaceous plant with 3 to 8 (to 10) decimeter long, distally branched shoots . The root system is characterized by the formation of a tap root .

The bare leaves are both basal and arranged on the stem. The non-rosette basal leaves are petiolate; the leaf margins can be lobed . The alternate stem leaves are stalked and pinnately lobed winged in lower areas , but in higher parts of the plant they are seated . The 4 to 12 (3 to 15) centimeters × 20 to 55 (12 to 70) millimeters measuring leaf blades show a lanceolate , egg-shaped, elliptical or elongated shape. They narrow towards the base of the leaf, tapering to a wedge shape and form small auricles . The spreader tip is pointed or pointed. The leaf margins are serrated or serrated and rarely almost entire.

Generative characteristics

The flowers of Iodanthus pinnatifidus are in loose racemose inflorescences . They lengthen considerably with fruit formation. Each flower is about 0.8 inches wide. The four pale violet 3 to 6 × 1 to 1.5 millimeters measured sepals are glabrous or below the peak fine hairs. The four-fold 7 to 12 (up to 14) × 1.5 to 2.5 (up to 3) millimeter large petals are thus significantly longer than the sepals. They are spatulate, nailed, and colored purple, pink, or white. The four-fold stamens consist of the 3 to 6 millimeter long stamens and the 2 to 2.5 millimeter long anthers. The middle nectar glands flow together with the glands arranged in a ring on the side. The fruit formation takes place in bulky, spreading to ascending, rarely upright pods with dimensions of 2 to 3.5 (1.5 to 4) centimeters × 1 to 1.5 millimeters. They are seated or arranged with short stems and are linear, stem-round, cylindrical and smooth. The stylus is (1 to) 2 to 4 millimeters long and the scar is head- shaped. In the ovary are 22 to 36 ovule included. Each pod, often purple in color, contains a single row of elongated seeds .

distribution

Iodanthus pinnatifidus is distributed in central and southeastern US states at altitudes of 50 to 300 meters.
