International cricket

The first test match at this stadium took place in October 1978 between Pakistan and India . Since then it has been the venue for numerous international encounters. The first One-Day International at Iqbal Stadium was held in November 1984 between Pakistan and New Zealand . At the Cricket World Cup 1987 , a preliminary round match was played in the stadium, at the Cricket World Cup 1996 two preliminary round matches and a quarter-finals were played here. The stadium is known for the adverse weather conditions. In the 1998/1999 season against Zimbabwe, for example, a test had to be canceled due to persistent rainfall, and poor lighting conditions were often the reason for game interruptions. During the Tour of England 1987/88 there was a scandal in the stadium after the umpire Shakoor Rana accused the English captain Mike Gatting of fraud and only after intervention by the British Foreign Office could the game continue with a day's delay. Since the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in 2009, no further international games have been played here.
