The game caused a scandal on the second day when the Pakistani umpire Shakoor Rana accused the English captain Mike Gatting of rearranging the field team during the bowler's approach and accusing them of cheating ( "You are a fucking cheat." ). The two then yelled at each other from a short distance and had to be separated. The next morning, Rana refused to resume his role as umpire should Gatling not apologize, while Gatling himself insisted on an apology from Rana. England then agreed to play initially, but both Pakistan and the umpires stayed in the pavilion. The teams stayed in the stadium for another six hours while a solution was fought. When this was not foreseeable, the British Foreign Office intervened. With the mediation of the British Ambassador Nicholas John Barrington , who feared serious consequences of a game or even tour cancellation, and under pressure from the English Association, Gatling handed over a handwritten apology on the morning of the fourth day. The game continued, but further provocations ensued from both sides. Among other things, the English Association paid its players a bonus for the difficulties they experienced on the tour. It was not until the 2000/2001 season that England completed a tour in Pakistan for the next time.
