Sri Lankan national cricket team in Pakistan for the 2008-09 season
The Sri Lankan national cricket team tour to Pakistan in the 2008-09 season took place from January 20 to March 5, 2009. Due to the attacks on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore , the tour was ended prematurely. It was an international cricket tour that was held as part of the 2008/09 international cricket season and included a three-game ODI series, which Sri Lanka won 2-1, and a test series of two games played in which all Games were counted as a draw. The ODI games were part of the ICC ODI Championship , the tests part of the ICC Test Championship .
prehistory
Originally it was planned for the period that India held a tour in Pakistan. For political reasons and security concerns following the attacks in Mumbai two months earlier, the Indian association BCCI refused to send a team. The world association ICC then carried out a safety investigation to guarantee the safety of its match officials. Originally three tests, three ODI and one Twenty20 were planned, but at the request of the Sri Lankan players, one test and the Twenty20 game was canceled.
Stages
The original plan was dated January 8, 2009, when Faisalabad was to host an ODI. At the request of the Sri Lankan Association SLC, however, this was changed on January 14th.

attack
procedure
On the way from the hotel to the stadium on the third day of the second test in Lahore, the bus of the Sri Lankan team was attacked by twelve armed attackers. Six Pakistani police officers and two civilians were killed. Two players, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana , were injured so badly that they were hospitalized. Five other players, including captain Mahela Jayawardene , suffered minor injuries. There were other injuries in the team's supervisory staff. The substitute referee Ahsan Raza was also seriously injured. After the attack, the team was driven to the stadium and flown out of the field by helicopter. With the next possible flight, the team left the country for Colombo . The current game was counted as a draw.
Consequences
As a result of the attack, other national teams refused to travel to Pakistan. The first were New Zealand , who relocated their tour to Pakistan in November 2009 to the United Arab Emirates on neutral ground . Since then, Pakistan has played its home games mostly in the United Arab Emirates or occasionally in England . It wasn't until 2015 that a team from another full member traveled to Zimbabwe for the first time for a tour in the country. One month after the attack, Pakistan was withdrawn from hosting the 2011 Cricket World Cup .
