During the morning of the day before the game, the umpires viewed TV material which they had requested the previous evening to determine whether the Sri Lankan team had carried out ball manipulation (ball tampering). They identified the Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal as he took something out of his pocket, put it in his mouth and then spread it on the ball. They then issued a penalty against the Sri Lankan team, which then refused to restart the game. Sri Lanka complained about the timing of the penalty and the associated replacement of the match ball. After two hours of discussion, the game resumed. After the test, Chandimal was banned from a test. Furthermore, an investigation was carried out against Chandimal, trainer Chandika Hathurusingha and team manager Asanka Gurusinha from the world association, whether they had violated the spirit of cricket by refusing to play.
