Sri Lankan national cricket team in England in the 2014 season
The Sri Lankan national cricket team tour to England for the 2014 season ran from May 13th to June 24th, 2014. The international cricket tour was part of the 2014 international season and included a Twenty20 , five ODIs and two test matches . The tests carried out were games as part of the ICC Test Championship , the ODIs part of the ICC ODI Championship and the Twenty20s part of the ICC T20I Championship . Sri Lanka won the Twenty20, the ODI series 3-2 and the test series 1-0. It was the first test series that Sri Lanka could win in England.
prehistory
Heading
The test series should initially take place in May in order to accommodate the two test series usual in England in the summer. However, since Sri Lanka wanted to allow its players to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League , a date was negotiated in June. Since England was unbeaten so far in May due to the weather conditions, with one exception on home soil, this allowed Sri Lanka a better starting position for the test series. Shortly before, Sri Lanka had won the Twenty20 World Cup , but their only loss in the tournament was a group game against England.
Assistant trainer Paul Farbrace
Shortly before the tour, the English federation announced that the Sri Lankan head coach Paul Farbrace was moving to the English coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Controversy
In the fifth ODI there was a so-called shortage incident. The Sri Lankan bowler Sachithra Senanayake ran to, but instead of bowling the ball to the batsman, he destroyed the wicket on his own side. Since the non-batting batsman Jos Buttler was not behind his line, the bowler appealed to the referee to remove Butler from the game. They first asked the Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews whether he really wanted a decision and when he agreed, Butler was taken out of the game with a run out . This led to expressions of displeasure on the part of the audience and, in retrospect, caused a lot of media coverage. The Sri Lankan team said they had warned Buttler twice before the first incident of its kind since 1992 in international cricket. The English captain Alastair Cook described the incident as a pretty poor act . In retrospect, the Marylebone Cricket Club , which is responsible for the rules, confirmed that Sri Lanka had acted correctly. Independently of this, Senanayake was reported to the world association in this game by the umpires due to a wrong bowling technique, which then banned him in July. It was not admitted again until December of that year.
