Gaddafi Stadium (formerly: Lahore Stadium ) is a cricket stadium in Lahore , Pakistan . The stadium is also home to the Pakistan Cricket Board . The stadium is part of a large sports complex.
history
The original design of the round stadium comes from the Dagestani architect Nasreddin Murat-Khan and was built in 1959 by Mian Abdul Khaliq and Company. In 1974 the stadium was named in honor of the Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi after he spoke out in favor of Pakistan's right to possess nuclear weapons at a meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference . In 1987 the stadium hosted the 1987 Cricket World Cup . In 1995/96 a modernization took place for the Cricket World Cup 1996 under the Pakistani architect Nayyar Ali Dada . He renovated the structure in the Mughal style with red bricks and arches. He had the concrete benches replaced with plastic seats. The area under the stands was closed and converted into commercial space for shops and offices. In 2009 there was an armed terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore near the stadium . As a result, Pakistan was agreed to co-host the 2011 Cricket World Cup .
Field hockey stadium
The National Hockey Stadium (Lahore) with around 45,000 seats is located in the immediate southeastern neighborhood . In 1978 the men's field hockey champions trophy took place in Lahore , followed by the final of the men's field hockey world championship in 1990 , in which the Pakistani hosts lost 3-1 to the Netherlands .
