South African team captain Hansie Cronje gave up his team's first innings to allow for a result in the Test. The world association ICC criticized this decision as not in the interests of the sport. Three months later, as part of the investigation into the betting scandal surrounding Cornje, it became known that he had made sure that a result was achieved in exchange for money.
