The New Zealand national cricket team tour to South Africa in the 2016 season took place from August 19 to 31, 2016. The international cricket tour was part of the 2016 international cricket season and included two tests . South Africa won the series 1–0.

Just seven weeks before the test, the grass surface in the stadium was replaced. Heavy rains since then caused too little grass growth on the playing area. When heavy rains occurred again during the game, the ground was not able to absorb it in the remaining game time and to ensure a safe game.
