draw

On the fourth day, Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar was interrogated by match referee Mike Denness for tampering with the ball. As a result, Tendulkar was suspended from a test. Dennes also punished five other players with game and fines. While Virender Sehwag was banned from a test due to excessive appealing, Harbhajan Singh , Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta received probation and fines. In addition, the captain Sourav Ganguly was given a three-game suspension on probation because he was unable to control his team. At a press conference the next day, when the media wanted to find out why the bans had been issued, Dennes withdrew from the fact that, according to the rules of the world association, he was not allowed to talk to the media. It was also announced at the press conference that the Indian association president Jagmohan Dalmiya would declare the tour over if Dennes was not withdrawn from the planned final game of the tour. The exact penalties were only announced in a press release after the press conference. The South African association supported the Indian in calling for Dennes to be withdrawn and the Indian media condemned the punishments as racism, which led to protests. The world association ICC stood behind the referee and refused to deduct him from the last test. The two national associations then announced that they would conduct the test without the referee as an unofficial test by refusing Dennes access to the stadium. The incident led the world association to set up a committee for match referees, which had already been drawn up by a committee and thus professionalized refereeing in international cricket. Mike Dennes was then only active as match referee on one tour and the Indian Association withdrew his request for a review of his performance when Dennes had to undergo heart surgery.
