Irene Becker (born March 30, 1951 in Aalborg ) is a Danish jazz musician (keyboards, composition).

Act

Becker studied musicology at the University of Copenhagen until 1981 and then continued his education at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock with Karl Berger and Naná Vasconcelos . She later studied composition with Bob Brookmeyer at the Rytmisk Conservatory of Music (second degree in 1998).

Becker initially belonged to the women's rock band Hos Anna (album of the same name in 1977). Since 1978 she has been a member of the Thermænius jazz quartet , from which the Dørge-Becker- Carlsen trio emerged. Becker is married to the guitarist Pierre Dørge and has been playing in his New Jungle Orchestra since 1981 ( e.g. The Jazzpar Prize , 1991); she also worked outside of this band with John Tchicai , Marilyn Mazur and Johnny Dyani . She was on tour with overtone singer Sainkho Namtchylak and recorded a very inspired studio CD with her. In recent years she has worked a lot with dancers and poets.

Travels and tours to Gambia , Ghana , Bali , Siberia and China gave her the opportunity to study in the field and explore these ancient musical cultures; u. a. she experimented with the fusion of gamelan and electroacoustic instruments.

As a composer she has written for big band , for a woodwind quintet and for choir, among others for the Scandinaviske Blæserkvintet, Wærmekvartetten, Figura-ensemblet, Den Danske Saxofonkvartet, Ars Nova Copenhagen, New Music Orchestra, Copenhagen Art Ensemble, Toneart Ensemble and the New Jungle Orchestra . Even Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares led to their works. She also composed film and theater music. From 1996 she worked as a teacher at the Musicological Institute of the University of Copenhagen.
