Irina Wassiljewna Poljakowa (also Irina Polyakova , Russian Ирина Васильевна Полякова ; born March 9, 1961 in Kazan , Tatar ASSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian trainer and former disabled athlete . She started in winter in sit-down skiing in the biathlon and cross-country skiing disciplines .

career

Polyakova got caught in a train as a child and lost both shins . She initially played tennis and also tried swimming. She only started skiing at the age of 35. Farida Safiullina began to train in 1989 Polyakowa, who first took part in the 1998 Paralympic Winter Games . She started cross-country skiing at distances between 2.5 and ten kilometers and came in seventh once and eighth three times. At the 2002 Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake City , she won a silver medal in the cross-country relay over the distance of 2.5 kilometers. In the same discipline Polyakowa won the gold medal at the following Paralympic Games in Turin in 2006 with Lyubow Wassiljewa and Tatiana Ilyuchenko. In the individual races she came in fourth over 2.5 and ten kilometers, in the middle distances in fifth and sixth place.

At her last Paralympic Games in Vancouver in 2010 , Poljakowa reached fourth place in the 2.4 kilometer pursuit of the biathlon and was two places ahead of Andrea Eskau from Germany. Over the ten kilometer distance Polyakowa was two places behind the bronze medal winner Eskau. In cross-country skiing over five kilometers, she reached ninth place. In 2010 Polyakova expressed the wish to take part in the Paralympics in Sochi . However, she ended her sporting career in 2011 at the age of 50 and coached Marta Sainullina , who won a bronze medal in Sochi in 2014 .

Polyakova has one son.

Awards

  • In 2015, the BBC put Irina Polyakova on its list of “ 100 Women ”.
  • Polyakova was awarded the First Class Medal of the Order For Merit to the Fatherland ("За заслуги перед Отечеством") in 2010 .

Trivia

Polyakova was known for bridging waiting times with ropes . At the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver she was knitting five pairs of socks for her family and her coach.
