Irja Agnes Browallius (born October 13, 1901 in Helsinki , † December 9, 1968 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish writer .

biography

After graduating from school, the daughter of the actor Carl Browallius studied medicine from 1922 to 1923 and then art from 1924 to 1925 . She then completed a teacher training course and, after passing the state examination, worked as a teacher in Glottra ( municipality of Hallsberg ) from 1927 to 1937 .

In 1934 she made her debut as a writer with the short story collection “Vid byvägar och älgstigar”. She had her first success in 1937 with the farmer's novel “Synden från Skruke” (Sin on Kruke), in which she tells the story of an indomitable desire in a forest village. Subsequently, “Elida från gårdar” (Elida from the farms) appeared in 1938, “Två slår den tredje” (Two beat the third) in 1939 and “Någon gång skall det ljusna” (Once upon a time) in 1941. She had her greatest success with "Ringar på vattnet" (Rings on the Water), in which she describes the story of a young teacher, her entanglements and tragic end in a lonely place.

For her literary achievements, she received the De Nios stora pris of the Swedish Literature Academy Samfundet De Nio in 1952 and the Dobloug Prize in 1962 , an award from the Svenska Academies for Fine Literature and Literary Studies .
