The Irvine Old Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Irvine in the council area of North Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The church is still in use as such today.

history

A church building was first recorded in Irvine in the 9th century. Another building was later erected at the same location. Today's Irvine Old Parish Church was built there as the third church after the medieval structure was classified as in danger of collapse. Work began in 1773 and completed in 1774. The resulting building initially offered 1,800 seats, but initially had no bell tower. This was added by volunteers in 1803. The bell was made as early as 1797. After repairs were carried out in 1830, the interior was renovated in 1897.

Triangular gables with round windows crown the centered arched windows in the tower section above. Tower clocks are set in on three sides. From the fourth floor onwards, the tower has an octagonal floor plan. There is a window opening in each side surface. The flanking Ionic pilasters have a surrounding cornice . The tower section above is constructed in a similar way, however open and blind arched windows alternate. The cornice supports the surrounding balustrade of the sixth floor.
