Irving J. Dunn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Irving John Dunn (born December 15, 1938 in California ) is an American chemical engineer and university professor. From 1971 to 2003 he taught at the ETH Zurich . His application for naturalization , which was rejected by the Swiss district of Einsiedeln in 2014 , caused an international stir.

Life

Dunn attended schools in the United States and the Netherlands. From 1956 to 1960 he studied chemical engineering at the University of Washington , after which he completed a doctorate at Princeton University until 1963 . After completing his doctoral thesis, he spent a year as a post-doctoral student at the University of Munich. From 1964 to 1969 he was assistant professor at the University of Idaho and then until 1971 at Robert College in Istanbul as an associate professor. In 1971 he switched to the technical-chemical institute of the ETH Zurich as a private lecturer , where he taught chemical and biological reaction engineering . He wrote numerous scientific publications and founded a further training course in biological reaction engineering in Braunwald GL in 1981 . In 2003 he retired.

In 2014, he applied for naturalization in Switzerland, which he was refused at the cost of CHF 3,600 because he had passed an examination at the Pfäffikon vocational training center on his basic knowledge of the situation in Switzerland, but not on the canton of Schwyz and his place of residence, the Einsiedeln district. Dunn did not know the number of lakes in the canton and could only partially name the six villages in the district. He turned down the offer to submit a second application for naturalization. The case made headlines at home and abroad. It was seen as an example of the narrow-mindedness of the Swiss rural population and compared with the film Die Schweizermacher .

Dunn is married and has three children.
