Isacco Artom

Isacco Artom (also Isaak Artom or Isaac Artom ; born December 31, 1829 in Asti , † January 24, 1900 in Rome ) was an Italian politician and diplomat .

Life

Isacco Artom was born into an influential Jewish family in the city of Asti . He completed his university studies at the University of Pisa, where he came into contact with circles close to the Risorgimento . In 1848 he fought against the Austrians as a member of a university battalion. Between 1850 and 1859 he worked as a journalist for the magazines "Opinione" and "Crepuscolo".

He resumed his law studies at the University of Turin, where he met Constantino Nigra , who became his close friend. In 1856 Artom became secretary to Camillo Benso von Cavour , then envoy to Denmark and Baden , from 1877 (as the first Jew) senator .
