Isaak Hess

Isaak Hess ( May 26, 1789 in Lauchheim - October 6, 1866 in Ellwangen ) was a German bookseller and antiquarian .

Life

Isaak Hess attended the rabbinical school in Fürth , whose teaching methods did not please him. After that he was a tutor and accountant for a few years . In 1817 he opened a bookshop in Lauchheim, which he relocated to Ellwangen in 1838 and to which he added a bookstore . The company became one of the most outstanding antiquarian booksellers of its time. Numerous important book and art antiquarians left his school, such as B. Ludwig Rosenthal . The exact processing of the catalogs he published was exemplary for the antiquarian book trade of the time. After his death the company was continued by his sons Moritz and Sigmund.

Isaak Hess played an important role in the emancipation movement of the Württemberg Jews in the 19th century. At a young age he became a board member of the Jewish community in Lauchheim . In the course of his life he worked in many charitable organizations, most of which were inspired by him. He was also a member of a government commission that prepared a law on the political and civil rights of Jews in Württemberg.
